Department of Energy Awards $95 Million to Projects

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded $95 million to universities and companies decarbonizing energy, transportation, chemical, and other industries.

Earlier this month, the DOE announced $30 million in funding for 13 national lab and university-led research projects to build new clean technology that is less dependent on minerals and supplies from other countries. Not surprisingly, these research projects will seek to find alternatives to cobalt, neodymium, and platinum. Each mineral is critical to decarbonization pathways for EVs, renewables, and emission control.

This week the DOE awarded $65 million to 22 projects focused on low-carbon biofuels for transportation and aviation. Here are a couple interesting research projects:

  • National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO was awarded $2.8 million to decrease the carbon intensity of producing a highly fermentable sugar.
  • Archer Daniels Midland in Decatur, IL was awarded $3.5 million to reduce the energy consumption in the separation process for sustainable fuels.
  • Alder Energy in Charleston, SC received $3.0 million to convert miscanthus, a highly promising biomass crop, to a sustainable fuel
  • D3MAX in Grand Forks, ND gets $500k to design a pilot plant to produce ethanol from corn stover, which is then converted to a sustainable fuel
  • T2C Energy in Pinellas Park, FL received around $500k to design a demonstration scale plant that converts waste landfill gas to renewable diesel.
  • AVAPCO in Thomaston, GA was awarded $2.8 million to demonstrate a production process for clean, affordable cellulosic sugars, to reduce emissions for a variety of products
  • Quasar Energy Group in Independence, OH was awarded $3.5 million to convert food waste to sustainable fuel precursors.

There is more to come from the DOE which has been very active in distributing awards and funding for the second half of the year.
