Inside this issue
Thank you to Kevin for the spark of interest in the patents and technology driving carbon capture, lithium extraction, wind turbine repair, solar cells, and landfill gas. There is wonderful innovation happening across the industry!
As I dig into the companies making headlines for raising capital and commercializing technology, I've started looking into the inventors who are on the cusp of something great. Nanotechnology used in solar cells. Drones for repairing wind turbines. Energy storage systems for commercial applications. Over 80,000 patents have been filed in 2021 already.
One of the patents I reviewed defined a novel method of CO2 direct air capture with an aim to produce drinking water:
The invention relates to integrated methods for direct capture of carbon dioxide and water from the atmosphere and their conversion into value-added products in an economical and carbon negative fashion. In one embodiment of the present invention, a portion of the water captured in a DAC process is treated, bottled, and sold as value-added drinking water, thereby offsetting the cost of the capture process.
With climate and Energy investors converging towards similar goals, capital will certainly be available to commercialize some of these unique methods and systems.
