Inside this issue

The Olympics are in full-swing in Japan and it's great to hear the stories of so many Olympians on their journey to this year's games. Every athlete has a unique journey.

There is also a developing energy story in Japan. The country has announced several measures over the last month to advance the hydrogen economy and renewables power.

As part of the Olympics, you will likely see athletes ride in the hydrogen powered buses. Comments and feedback has been great so far, however, there is one slight problem.

The problem is cost. A fuel cell bus from Toyota costs ¥100m ($900,000) for a six-year lease. A diesel bus costs ¥24m ($220,000) and has a useful life of 15 years.

At a cost of ~4x diesel buses, many local municipalities cannot afford the price of hydrogen buses. This may impact the adoption of Toyota's hydrogen bus. However, Toyota will continue to innovate in the transportation sector with new hydrogen bus models that bring the cost closer to a diesel bus.
