$280M Renewable Diesel Project to Boost South Carolina Forestry

Published by Todd Bush on December 16, 2025

Carolina Renewable Products has started construction on a major new facility in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. The $280 million project focuses on converting pine wood by-products into renewable diesel and is a big win for the local clean energy sector.

This 20-acre site at 546 Prosperity Drive will use residuals from nearby sawmills to create a drop-in fuel that works in existing engines without needing any modifications. Along with renewable diesel, the plant will produce biochar and wood vinegar.

Project Specs

  • Investment: $280 million
  • Job Creation: 155 jobs over the next five years
  • Timeline: Construction starts spring 2026, with full capacity expected by 2027
  • Location: Orangeburg, South Carolina

State officials are backing this initiative because it supports the forestry industry, which has struggled recently with mill shutdowns and lower demand. Robert Bryan, CEO of Carolina Renewable Products, noted that Orangeburg was carefully chosen to help expand clean fuel production while driving innovation in the region.

Financial support includes a $755,000 grant from the Coordinating Council for Economic Development and $200,000 from the South Carolina Secretary of Agriculture.
