8 Rivers Progresses Carbon Capture Project at Wyoming Power Plant

8 Rivers Capital, a decarbonization technology firm based in North Carolina, has awarded global engineering company Wood a preliminary front-end engineering and design (pre-FEED) contract for its Wyoming carbon capture project.
The project, a collaboration between 8 Rivers and Oregon-headquartered utility PacifiCorp, is located at Rocky Mountain Power’s established plant to reduce emissions. The pre-FEED is expected to be completed in Q3 2025.

8 Rivers and PacifiCorp signed a Memorandum of Understanding last year to evaluate a potential carbon capture project at one of PacifiCorp’s sites.
The project will deploy 8 Rivers’ Allam-Fetvedt Cycle (AFC) technology, paired with direct-fired supercritical CO2 turbines.
8 Rivers is developing the CO2 turbines with Siemens Energy. In August, the companies announced a collaboration to develop a zero-emission turbine powered by captured CO2.
Since 2023, the companies have worked to develop the turbines for various applications and fuel types.
8 Rivers has also completed a study with a commercial partner assessing the feasibility of a biomass-fueled AFC negative emissions power system.
Rocky Mountain Power has been evaluating carbon capture projects at its Wyoming coal facilities since 2018.
With support from the U.S. federal Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) in 2014, which helps balance electricity supply and demand, the company has reduced carbon emissions by 35 million tonnes.
