A Sea Change for Sustainability: Collaboration Drives First US Hydrogen-Fueled Ferry

The San Francisco Bay witnessed a historic moment last Friday as SWITCH Maritime, a leader in zero-emission maritime vessels, received the coveted Certificate of Inspection (COI) for its flagship hydrogen ferry, Sea Change. This COI marks a crucial milestone not just for SWITCH Maritime but for the entire maritime industry. This proves that ferries can run without polluting the air, opening the door to a cleaner future.

Collaborative Efforts Steer the Course

This achievement wasn't a solo voyage. The COI ceremony, held on board the Sea Change itself, was a testament to the power of collaboration. Captain Taylor Q. Lam, the US Coast Guard Sector San Francisco commander, presence highlighted the US Coast Guard's vital role in ensuring safety and compliance throughout the process.

"This COI represents the culmination of years of close collaboration with the US Coast Guard," said Pace Ralli, CEO of SWITCH Maritime. His words echoed the sentiment of many as he expressed gratitude to all partners who helped navigate this uncharted territory. Ralli called this a "first step," hinting at a future with many more eco-friendly ferries.

Technological Triumph: The Power of Hydrogen

The Sea Change is a technological marvel. Hydrogen fuel cells power its electric motors, enabling travel distances of up to 300 nautical miles at speeds of 15 knots. This innovative technology offers capabilities comparable to traditional diesel-powered ferries, eliminating the need for extensive shoreside charging infrastructure that plagues battery-only vessels.

Setting Sail for Sustainability: Pilot Program and Beyond

Following an official launch in June, the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) will pilot the Sea Change for six months. This pilot service is made possible by a unique public-private sponsorship model. Big names like Chevron Corporation, the Golden State Warriors, and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) stand alongside United Airlines, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway, and Transportation District, and Blue & Gold Fleet in supporting this groundbreaking initiative. After the initial demonstration period, SWITCH plans to integrate the Sea Change into a permanent ferry route. This is just the beginning, with SWITCH actively developing even larger and faster ferries for the San Francisco Bay and other major ferry routes around the globe.

A Smoother Journey: SWITCH Maritime's Supportive Model

SWITCH Maritime is a champion for accelerating the adoption of net-zero vessels. They understand the challenges operators face and offer a solution – shouldering the regulatory and construction risks. Through a "hardware-as-a-service" model, SWITCH essentially leases these new vessels to established operators, easing the transition to cleaner technology. SWITCH's solutions are adaptable, catering to the specific needs of operators striving to comply with stricter emission regulations. This paves a realistic path for operators to achieve carbon-neutral fleets over time.

A Catamaran Built for the Future: Unveiling the Sea Change's Engineering Prowess

The Sea Change itself is a marvel of modern engineering. Built at the All American Marine shipyard in Washington, this 75-passenger catamaran ferry boasts an integrated hydrogen power system from Zero Emission Industries. Cummins supplies the 360kW fuel cells, while BAE Systems provides the 600kW electric motor propulsion.

Public and Private Forces Unite: Funding the Sea Change

The project's success wasn't solely driven by private enterprise. A $3 million grant from CARB, administered by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD), played a crucial role. This grant originated from the California Climate Investments initiative, a program that leverages cap-and-trade dollars to combat climate change, bolster the economy, and improve public health, particularly in disadvantaged communities.

BAAQMD's commitment goes beyond grant funding. Through their Climate Tech Finance program, they provided the project with the first-ever loan guarantee. This program, established in collaboration with the California Infrastructure Economic Development Bank and the Northern California Financial Development Corporation (NorCal FDC), aims to accelerate the adoption of new climate technologies by mitigating financial risks. With this guarantee, SWITCH secured a $5 million commercial loan from KeyBank and subsequently obtained additional equity funding from Nexus Development Capital, bringing the Sea Change project to fruition.

A Beacon of Hope for a Sustainable Future: The Sea Change and Beyond

The Sea Change is more than a ferry; it's a symbol of collaboration and a beacon of hope for a sustainable future. The collective efforts of SWITCH Maritime, the US Coast Guard, visionary public and private sponsors, and innovative technology providers have made history. This project serves as a springboard for the wider adoption of zero-emission technologies within the maritime industry, paving the way for cleaner air and a healthier planet.
