Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE: AMRC) and Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE: RSG) have brought a 5.2-MW-electrical renewable natural gas (RNG) facility online at the Upper Rock Island County Landfill in Illinois, according to a press release issued on Tuesday.

The facility upgrades landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG that can be used as a low-carbon transport fuel or for other applications, Ameresco said.
The plant is designed to process about 2,000 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas and to produce more than 500,000 dekatherms of RNG per year, according to Ameresco, which owns the facility.
The company said the project is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 27,000 metric tonnes annually by capturing and upgrading methane that would otherwise be released to the atmosphere.
The Upper Rock project is the 16th RNG facility developed by Ameresco in partnership with Republic Services and follows the announcement of another Illinois-based RNG project in mid-2025. It expands Ameresco’s RNG portfolio and supports Republic Services’ goal to beneficially reuse 50% more biogas by 2030, the statement added.
