Something big just happened beneath the Saskatchewan prairies. MAX Power Mining Corp. has completed Canada's first-ever well specifically targeting natural hydrogen, and the results are turning heads across the clean energy sector. The Lawson well, drilled to a total depth of 2,278 meters, confirmed natural hydrogen in multiple geological horizons, marking a potential turning point for North American energy exploration.
This isn't just another exploratory well. It's the first dedicated natural hydrogen well on Canadian soil, and it landed squarely on the Genesis Trend, a 475-kilometer geological corridor that could hold significant clean energy potential. MAX Power has been building toward this moment for months.
The Lawson 15-19 well penetrated 72 meters into the basement complex, recovering core samples from geological formations rarely explored in Saskatchewan's drilling history. Out of 167,000 drill holes in the province's records, only 110 had ever recovered core from the Precambrian basement complex before this.

A service rig arrived at the Lawson site during the week of December 1, 2025, to begin zone testing. This next phase involves perforating the well casing at specific zones of interest and capturing gas and liquid samples for detailed chemical analysis. The goal is to determine commercial viability, including flow rates and volume potential.
The analytic phase involves collaboration with the University of Regina, the Colorado School of Mines, and the Petroleum Technology Research Centre in Regina. Core samples have been shipped to PTRC's specialized rock analysis facility for advanced testing.

MAX Power isn't slowing down. The company has already accelerated plans for a second well at the Bracken target, located roughly 325 kilometers southwest of Lawson near the Montana border. Here's what's in motion:
The Bracken target sits within the Grasslands Project, covering 120,000 permitted acres in the Swift Current Anorogenic Province. This area features a rare rock assemblage and proximity to known natural hydrogen and helium occurrences.
Saskatchewan is positioning itself as a hub for natural hydrogen research and development. The Lawson well sits adjacent to the proposed Hydrogen Hub in the Regina-Moose Jaw industrial corridor, creating potential synergies for future commercialization.
MAX Power now holds approximately 1.3 million acres of exploration permits in the province, with another 5.7 million acres under application. The Genesis Trend alone has identified more than 40 early-stage prospects, with at least 20 potential lookalike targets that could benefit from what's learned at Lawson.
Natural hydrogen offers a compelling alternative to manufactured hydrogen. Unlike green or blue hydrogen production methods, natural hydrogen exists in underground reservoirs and can potentially be extracted at a fraction of the cost, with minimal carbon footprint. If commercial viability is confirmed, Saskatchewan could become a major player in an entirely new energy class.
