A New Approach to Climate and Water Security
Capture6, a company pioneering water-positive carbon removal solutions, has secured $27.5 million in Series A and project funding. The investment, led by Tetrad Corporation, also includes support from Hyundai Motor Group's ZER01NE Ventures, Energy Capital Ventures, Elemental Impact, and others. The funds will accelerate Capture6’s efforts in carbon sequestration and freshwater production, creating an innovative approach to tackling climate change and water scarcity simultaneously.

Capture6’s technology repurposes waste brine from desalination and industrial processes, turning it into a solvent that mineralizes CO₂ in a single step. Unlike traditional direct air capture (DAC) methods, which require multiple energy-intensive processes, this approach integrates with existing water infrastructure, making carbon removal more efficient and cost-effective.
According to Ethan Cohen-Cole, CEO of Capture6, "Climate change is creating water insecurity for much of the world’s population, driving up demand for freshwater worldwide, and exacerbating the root problem as current methods of water treatment are carbon intensive. Our approach reduces waste streams from desalination and wastewater treatment while generating new water sources, lowering waste disposal costs, improving the efficiency of water production facilities, and decarbonizing projects simultaneously."
Capture6 has already announced four water-positive carbon capture facilities across three continents, with projects in the U.S., Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Australia, and the Middle East. These developments integrate Capture6’s technology with industrial partners and water facilities, helping them optimize operations while reducing carbon footprints.
One notable collaboration is with the Palmdale Water District, where Capture6’s system is being deployed to eliminate the need for 100 acres of brine ponds and cut 40% in lifetime costs. The project exemplifies how carbon removal can be embedded into existing infrastructure, benefiting both climate and water security.
Aaron Hilkemann, spokesperson and board member of Tetrad Corporation, emphasized the broader impact, stating, "Numerous businesses and industries face wastewater disposal and freshwater acquisition challenges to their growth and long-term success. In Capture6, we see a company committed to addressing these challenges head-on. Their solution decreases the financial burden for businesses and builds momentum around environmentally beneficial methods of water production and waste treatment."

The Series A funding round was advised by Rothschild & Co. and included investment from Bridge Investment, Sopoong Ventures, Third Derivative, Stan and Jane Rodbell, and the Jacob S. Shapiro Foundation. This backing underscores growing confidence in Capture6’s ability to scale water-positive carbon capture solutions and deliver meaningful climate benefits.
Danya Hakeem, VP of Portfolio at Elemental Impact, stated, "Freshwater scarcity demands we rethink traditional water infrastructure to ensure districts can provide affordable, clean water and remove harmful pollutants. We are proud to double down on our support for Capture6 and the Palmdale Water District project to help deliver meaningful cost savings while providing reliable, clean water to a community that needs it most."
The potential of Capture6’s system extends beyond water districts. The World Economic Forum projects that global freshwater demand will exceed supply by 40% by 2030, making innovations like Capture6’s technology critical to long-term sustainability. By reimagining carbon removal through water infrastructure, Capture6 is bridging the gap between climate resilience and resource management.
Vic Pascucci, Managing Partner at Energy Capital Ventures, reinforced this vision, saying, "The technologies with the biggest potential impact are those that enable clean, safe, reliable, cost-effective energy. This funding elevates Capture6 as the industry leader in direct air capture while simultaneously producing fresh water. After years of studying this space, we recognize Capture6 as a true game-changer through permanent carbon removal plus water security."
In 2024, Capture6 announced that Frontier facilitated a pre-purchase of 1,000 tons of carbon removal for Shopify and Stripe, marking another milestone in securing carbon offset agreements.
The Series A raise positions Capture6 for further expansion into global markets, reinforcing the importance of integrating carbon removal within existing infrastructure. With increasing regulatory support and investment interest, Capture6’s approach to water-positive DAC technology is setting a new standard for sustainable industrial solutions.
