China Launches World's First Semi-Submersible Offshore Wind-to-Hydrogen Platform

Published by Todd Bush on October 26, 2026

The world's first semi-submersible offshore wind-to-hydrogen platform has floated in Jiangmen, south China's Guangdong Province, opening a new avenue for the development and utilization of clean marine energy, its developer China International Marine Containers (CIMC) announced Friday.

The Shenhai Hydrogen Energy No. 1 platform moved down a mechanized comb-type slipway before tugboats guided it into open water, where it completed the float-out.

Unlike conventional offshore wind farms, which send electricity to shore through undersea cables, the platform is designed to convert green electricity from offshore wind directly into hydrogen at sea.

Its integrated systems cover water electrolysis hydrogen production, methanol production and hydrogen storage, tackling challenges including high transmission losses over long distances and the difficulty of connecting deep-sea wind power to the grid.

The platform has completed onshore commissioning of its process systems and will soon head to waters off Danzhou City in south China's Hainan Province for offshore deployment and testing.
