EDMONTON, AB – Today, the Government of Alberta announced $20 million in funding, delivered through Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA), for four projects advancing carbon capture, hydrogen transportation, energy infrastructure and land reclamation in rural and northern Alberta. Funding is sourced from the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund.
The investment will put innovative solutions to work while supporting the industries and communities that power Alberta’s economy. Projects are located in Peace River, the County of Newell, Hardisty, and other sites across Alberta.
If successful, the four projects are estimated to reduce 1,400 tCO2e by 2030, and create 589 jobs, generating $95 million GDP.

Develop the Brooks Newell Hydrogen Hub to stimulate hydrogen supply and demand in southeast Alberta through vehicle retrofits, electrolytic hydrogen production, and refueling infrastructure.
Environmental Material Sciences Inc. (LiORA)
ERA Funding: $3,000,000 | Project Total Value: $9,100,000
Advance and validate BioLodestone, a natural nutrient solution that accelerates the breakdown of hydrocarbon contamination in soil.
Northiana Energy Solutions Inc.
ERA Funding: $5,000,000 | Project Total Value: $11,600,000
Demonstrate Continuous Multilayered Encapsulation (CME) technology to improve the transportation of bitumen through existing pipeline infrastructure.
ERA Funding: $7,000,000 | Project Total Value: $25,950,000
Advance the Peace River carbon capture project using Svante’s technology to capture approximately 500,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from Mercer’s pulp mill.
ERA funding recipients are required to publicly report project outcomes, including emissions reductions, job creation, environmental and economic benefits, and key lessons learned. Final outcomes reports are shared publicly to help advance technologies toward commercialization and inform future innovation efforts.
