France discovered the world's largest reserve of 46 million tons of natural hydrogen worth $92 billion that could reshape the world's clean energy industry, as per a report. French scientists have found the natural hydrogen below the soil in Folschviller, a region in the Moselle department, according to Interesting Engineering. This discovery has the potential to transform the global energy market by providing a new source of carbon-free fuel and putting France at the pinnacle of the global energy revolution, as per the report. Scientists from the GeoRessources laboratory and CNRS found this unexpected resource while they were on a mission to find methane, reported Interesting Engineering. But rather than methane, they found a vast deposit of white hydrogen that occurs naturally, 4,101 feet (1,250 meters) deep, as per the report.

Unlike renewable energy-dependent industrial production of green hydrogen or the polluting gray hydrogen made from fossil fuels, white hydrogen is naturally occurring in the ground, reported Interesting Engineering. It means that it does not need energy-consuming processes for production, but can be accessed and utilized without any emissions. According to scientists, it is estimated that the 46 million tons of natural hydrogen would substitute more than half of the world's annual gray hydrogen production but without the environmental costs, Interesting Engineering. The experts valued this deposit at around $92 billion, making it one of the biggest energy finds in history, according to the report.
The hydrogen industry has long been fighting two significant hurdles: the high expense of green hydrogen production and the environmental degradation caused by gray hydrogen, as per Interesting Engineering. White hydrogen is the best way to solve both these issues. Because it already exists in the ground, it avoids the need for costly and energy-intensive electrolysis procedures and does not use fossil fuels, so it is a much cleaner, less expensive option, according to the report.
One of the scientists who worked on the study, Doctor Jacques Pironon, claimed that, “Our research suggests that natural hydrogen could be far more abundant than previously thought. If we can find efficient ways to extract and use it, we may have a powerful new tool in the fight against climate change,” quoted Interesting Engineering.
The find puts the Lorraine area, traditionally home to coal and steel production, at the centre of a new energy revolution, as per the report. Experts have claimed that the production of these resources would generate thousands of jobs, stimulate the local economy, and increase France's energy security, according to the report. By accessing this natural hydrogen, France would be able to decrease its dependence on imported fossil fuels, becoming a leading force in Europe's clean energy shift, reported Interesting Engineering.
Pironon also highlighted that, “We need to understand the full potential of these hydrogen reservoirs and develop safe, efficient methods to extract them,” as quoted in the report.
What is the recent discovery in France?Scientists in France uncovered a massive 46 million tons of natural hydrogen beneath the soil of Folschviller, potentially transforming the global energy market.
Can this hydrogen be used immediately? While hydrogen exists naturally, scientists need to develop efficient extraction methods to make it usable for energy production.
