How SoCalGas and EVOLOH's Collaboration is Making Clean Hydrogen More Affordable

Published by Todd Bush on July 3, 2024

The fight against climate change demands a global shift towards renewable energy sources. Hydrogen, particularly clean renewable hydrogen, has emerged as a promising contender. But a major hurdle remains – making its production cost-competitive with traditional energy sources. This is where a collaborative effort between Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) and EVOLOH, a developer of cutting-edge electrolyzer technology, is making significant waves.

How SoCalGas and EVOLOH's Collaboration is Making Clean Hydrogen More Affordable

A Shared Vision for a Brighter Future

SoCalGas, a leading natural gas distribution company, is actively involved in shaping California's clean energy future. Jawaad Malik, SoCalGas' chief strategy and sustainability officer, emphasizes the importance of innovation: "Meeting the growing demand for clean renewable hydrogen production will require an extraordinary expansion of the current electrolyzer market. Innovative projects like this can help significantly reduce electrolyzer system costs and production time..."

EVOLOH's focus lies on anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers, a technology with the potential to overcome limitations of traditional methods. Dr. Jimmy Rojas, EVOLOH's CEO, highlights the versatility of their approach: "When our technology is produced using renewable energy, hydrogen becomes a versatile, flexible and carbon-free energy platform..." This collaboration between a seasoned industry leader and a tech innovator has resulted in a breakthrough that could significantly impact the renewable energy landscape.

The Power of Collaboration: A 25% Leap Forward

The joint project focused on improving the AEM electrolyzer manufacturing process. SoCalGas' Research, Development, and Demonstration (RD&D) program provided crucial funding and technical assistance. EVOLOH's AEM technology uses readily available materials and a roll-to-roll manufacturing process, leading to a shorter supply chain and faster production.

The project's success story lies in a remarkable 25% reduction in capital costs for the electrolyzer technology. This translates to more affordable clean hydrogen production, a key factor for wider adoption. Furthermore, the project achieved a 15% increase in hydrogen production efficiency, extending the lifespan of the equipment.

A Brighter Future Fueled by Clean Hydrogen

The cost reduction achieved through this collaboration has significant implications. It brings clean hydrogen production closer to competing with traditional energy sources and other renewable technologies. This can lead to a wider range of applications, including:

  • Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions: By replacing fossil fuels with clean hydrogen, various industries can significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Clean Energy Across Sectors: Hydrogen's versatility allows it to be a viable fuel source in sectors like heavy transport, steelmaking, and fertilizer production.

Scaling Up for a Sustainable Tomorrow

EVOLOH is poised to take the next step with their new Center of Excellence in Lowell, Massachusetts. This facility aims to produce a staggering 3.75GW per year in electrolyzer stacks by 2025, with an even higher target of 15GW by 2027. This signifies a massive scale-up that can truly revolutionize the clean hydrogen industry.

The Road Ahead: A Sustainable Energy Future

SoCalGas and EVOLOH's collaboration is a shining example of how innovation and collaboration can pave the way for a more sustainable future. The significant reduction in costs associated with clean hydrogen production is a game-changer. As EVOLOH scales up production and the technology finds wider applications, we can move closer to a future powered by clean, renewable energy sources. This innovative project serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the immense potential for technological advancements to address the pressing challenge of climate change.
