NEG8 Carbon, an innovative Irish company, is spearheading efforts to combat climate change by removing carbon from the atmosphere. With the goal of capturing 100 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2050, they launched Ireland’s first operational direct air capture (DAC) system in 2023.

Their upcoming large-scale pilot in 2024 marks a significant step towards this ambitious target.

NEG8 Carbon has partnered with Deep Sky, a Montreal-based leader in carbon removal, to deploy its patented carbon capture technology at their pilot site in Canada. This system can remove over 300 tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to the emissions of a full flight from London to New York or the CO2 absorbed by 13,000 trees.
Walton Institute Partnership: In collaboration with The Walton Institute, NEG8 Carbon is embarking on a two-year AI project. This initiative will use machine learning to optimize the DAC system’s carbon capture and release cycles by analyzing climatic conditions, energy prices, and internal system conditions. Dr. John Breen, Chief Technology Officer of NEG8 Carbon, stated, “The key to scaling up our technology is energy efficiency. Several external factors, including air temperature, humidity, and the condition of the sorbent material, influence the efficiency of the DAC system.”
In May 2024, NEG8 Carbon received funding from the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Industry Awards RD&I Fellowship Programme. This supports a collaboration with the University of Limerick, bringing Sorbent Technology Chemist Andrey Bezrukov onto the team to enhance materials research for DAC efficiency.
The company, currently employing 13 people, plans to expand its team to over 30 within the next 18 months. This growth focuses on bolstering the technology team and hiring engineers to drive research and execute upcoming projects.
Adrian Costigan, Chief Commercial Officer of NEG8 Carbon, highlighted the market’s potential: “The carbon removal market is poised for substantial growth as the urgency to address climate change intensifies. Analysts project that the market could reach between $10 billion and $40 billion annually by 2030. This growth is driven by advancements in carbon removal technologies, increasing investments, and supportive government policies.”
The captured CO2 will be stored underground through a natural mineralization process, where it reacts with minerals to form stable carbonate compounds, ensuring long-term security and stability. This process, managed and monitored by NEG8 Carbon’s partners, provides a reliable solution for carbon sequestration, preventing the CO2 from re-entering the atmosphere.
