Octopus Energy Generation, one of Europe's largest renewable energy investors, has announced a new $60 million capital commitment to nature-based solutions platform Cultivo, significantly scaling up their existing partnership to accelerate grasslands regeneration and carbon removal across the United States.
The fresh injection of capital comes roughly two years after the companies first joined forces, and reflects growing institutional confidence in U.S. grasslands as a *high-integrity, scalable* carbon removal strategy. Grasslands store more than a third of the world's terrestrial carbon, yet have historically been overlooked in climate finance compared to forests and technological removal methods.

The additional funding is directed at expanding Cultivo's pipeline of U.S. grasslands projects, supporting ranching communities, and generating high-quality, nature-based carbon removal credits aligned with the Core Carbon Principles. Cultivo uses proprietary technology and algorithms to identify, develop, and manage natural capital projects, covering regenerative grazing, agroforestry, afforestation and reforestation, mangrove restoration, improved forest management, and biochar.
The company has already enrolled more than 650,000 acres of U.S. grasslands and is on track to surpass 2 million acres this year. That enrolled acreage is projected to remove 9 million tonnes of CO2 over the next 30 years.
Alex Brierley, Co-Head of Octopus Energy Generation's Fund Management Team, said:
"We love when technology helps nature do what it does best – cut emissions fast. By putting meaningful capital into natural capital projects, we can support ranching communities, strengthen these vital landscapes, and develop grasslands into global assets."
The new commitment follows a series of milestones that have steadily grown the partnership's reach. In December 2025, Cultivo acquired grasslands carbon developer Kateri, adding rancher engagement capabilities, soil carbon modeling, and virtual fencing technology to its platform. The United Nations has also declared 2026 the *International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists*, adding policy momentum to the growing corporate demand for soil carbon credits.
Dr. Manuel Piñuela, Cultivo CEO and Co-Founder, said:
"Our partnership with Octopus Energy Generation has been transformational. The increase of their capital allocation to $100 million validates our strategy of building a vertically integrated, institutional-grade platform for U.S. natural assets and signals a new era for grasslands. This increased capital allows us to continue accelerating the growth of our U.S. grasslands and carbon removal project pipeline at speed and scale."
Octopus Energy Generation manages 4.9 GW of renewable energy projects across 21 countries, including wind and solar farms valued at approximately $9 billion. Its portfolio generates enough clean power for 3.2 million homes annually.
Cultivo is a Berkeley-based Public Benefit Corporation that develops and operates large-scale natural assets. Its platform manages the full project lifecycle across grasslands, forests, and coastal ecosystems, partnering with institutional investors and corporations that treat nature as essential infrastructure.
