Puro.earth has certified and issued CO2 Removal Certificates for a Norwegian bioenergy with carbon capture and storage project, marking the first time verified credits have been issued from a biogas-based BECCS facility anywhere in the world.
The certification covers the project's first four months of operation, from February through May 2026, at the Veas wastewater treatment plant in Slemmestad, Norway, developed by Inherit Carbon Solutions. More than 700 CO2 Removal Certificates, known as CORCs, were issued in the public Puro Registry, with each certificate representing one tonne of CO2 permanently removed from the atmosphere and geologically stored.

Biogenic CO2 released during biogas production at Veas is captured and liquefied by HoopCO2, a Veas subsidiary that installed its capture technology jointly with Bright Renewables. The liquefied CO2 travels by road to the Northern Lights receiving terminal in Øygarden, west of Bergen, before moving offshore by pipeline for permanent storage roughly 2,600 metres beneath the seabed.
Northern Lights has stored fossil-based CO2 offshore since August 2025, but the Veas project marks its first delivery of biogenic CO2. Under its agreement with Inherit, the site is expected to supply up to 7,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The certification followed third-party audit and verification under Puro.earth's Geologically Stored Carbon methodology, with ongoing monitoring expected to support further issuances as the project continues.
"Biogenic CO2 that would otherwise have been released is instead captured and permanently stored," said Jan-Willem Bode, President of Puro.earth. He added that the project points to significant regional potential for BECCS, given the scale of biogas production across Norway, the Nordics, and the rest of Europe.
"This project shows just how much potential there is across the biogas supply chain," said Kaja Voss, CEO of Inherit Carbon Solutions, who added that the certification gives her company a clear, credible path to bring the credits to market.
Puro.earth said the approach could be replicated across other biogas and wastewater facilities in Europe, since it connects existing infrastructure to dedicated CO2 transport and storage rather than requiring new industrial build-outs. That could open a new revenue stream for utilities and biogas operators already producing biomethane.
The certification adds to a wave of BECCS activity in Europe this year. In May, Microsoft signed a seven-year agreement with Denmark's BioCirc to purchase 650,000 tonnes of carbon removals from a separate BECCS platform, underscoring corporate appetite for durable, verified credits as companies work toward net-zero targets.
Puro.earth is a Nasdaq-backed crediting platform and standard for engineered carbon removal. Since 2019, the company has certified projects across methodologies including biochar, enhanced rock weathering, and geologically stored carbon, issuing CORCs through the publicly accessible Puro Registry to support corporate net-zero and carbon removal claims.
