PX Group Wins ‘Landmark’ Teesside Biomass Contract

Published by Todd Bush on February 14, 2025

Saltend Chemicals Park-owner PX Group has been awarded an operations and maintenance (O&M) contract for the Tees Renewable Energy Plant (Tees REP).

The facility, located in Tees Valley, is one of the world’s largest purpose-built pellet biomass power plants, with a capacity to generate 299 MW of electricity, or 2.3 TWh per year, equivalent to powering 600,000 homes.

Tees REP is owned by MGT Teesside, acquired by Macquarie Group and PKA in 2016 on a 50:50 basis. The plant uses co-products from timberland for biomass pellets, traced from point of origin to meet sustainability criteria regulated by Ofgem.

Enviva Wilmington Holdings signed a 15-year offtake agreement with Tees REP in 2016 for nearly 1 million tonnes per year of wood pellets.

PX Group, a portfolio company of Ara Partners, is taking over O&M at Tees REP after providing consultancy services through PX Engineering during commissioning.

PX also operates the St Fergus Gas plant in Peterhead and the Teesside Gas processing plant for North Sea Midstream Partners (NSMP) and manages biomass plants for Gren, a Finnish investor.

Dave Thompson, COO of PX Group, said, “Taking on O&M for the largest new-build biomass plant in the world is a landmark moment for PX Group and a transformative step for the regional energy sector.”

Ian Coxon, CEO of MGT, added, “PX Group’s extensive expertise in managing large-scale green energy projects makes them the ideal partner for O&M at Tees REP.”
