Södra will launch a carbon capture pilot project at its Värö pulp mill in early 2026 to explore new business opportunities using biogenic carbon dioxide as a raw material. The initiative will test capture technology from Canadian firm Svante Technologies and aims to build knowledge for potential future large-scale implementation. The project is funded through the Swedish Energy Agency's Industriklivet initiative, according to Södra.
The captured carbon dioxide could be used in sectors such as food production, chemical manufacturing, or for the creation of longer-lived products like construction materials and e-fuels. A facility from the research institute RISE Research Institutes of Sweden will also be connected during parts of the test period to trial liquefaction of the captured gas. The long-term goal is to increase the value derived from each tree and create new revenue streams without increasing forest harvesting.
