The International Biochar Initiative (IBI) and HAMERKOP Climate Impacts have released an updated edition of their Biochar Manual for Carbon Removal, building on the original guide published in 2024.
The manual is designed as a practical resource for biochar producers, project developers, buyers, and researchers navigating the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) market. Its goal is straightforward: make the path to certification clearer and more accessible.
The refreshed edition includes three key improvements. First, an expanded section on monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV), along with deeper coverage of permanence factors critical to biochar CDR projects. Second, step-by-step guidance on methodology selection, complete with updated pricing for each biochar certification standard. Third, the addition of Isometric's biochar methodology to the overall landscape of available guidelines.
The manual synthesizes methodologies from leading certification standards, offering side-by-side comparisons to help developers and investors choose the right approach for their projects.

Biochar CDR is scaling fast. In the first half of 2025 alone, 1.6 million tonnes of biochar carbon removal credits were contracted, according to CDR.fyi. With demand accelerating, clear guidance on certification pathways has become essential for new entrants.
"For biochar to realize its full potential in carbon removal, producers and project developers need more than enthusiasm, they need consistency, credibility, and clarity," said Luisa Marín, Executive Director of IBI. "This manual is designed to meet that need, providing the technical foundation to scale verifiable projects around the world."
The guide is available as a free digital resource through IBI's website.
