Verra Approves First Credits Under CCS Methodology

Published by Todd Bush on November 6, 2026

WASHINGTON – Nov. 6, 2026 | Verra has approved the first carbon credits under its carbon capture and storage (CCS) methodology for a project in northern Texas. Credits can now be issued to the Barnett Zero Project (Verra Project 6016) in the city of Bridgeport. The project captures CO2 separated from raw natural gas at a processing plant, then compresses the CO2 and stores it permanently in an injection well nearby.

The credits were generated under Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodology VM0049 Carbon Capture and Storage v1.0, which establishes criteria and procedures for quantifying greenhouse gas emission reductions and carbon dioxide removals from projects that capture CO2 and store it permanently.

The project was developed by BKV Corporation (NYSE:BKV) and verified by the independent validation/verification body (VVB), GHD Limited. It uses module VMD0062 CO2 Capture from Natural Gas Processing together with VM0049 to account for the emissions impact of diverting CO2 separated from natural gas streams and storing it permanently. The module addresses a specific and largely unavoidable emissions source from an energy source that will continue to be relied on as part of the net-zero transition.

"Carbon capture and storage is one of the most technically demanding approaches in the market. Capturing and permanently storing the CO₂ that would otherwise be vented from natural gas is real, measurable climate action. Barnett Zero is the first of many projects we expect to be using VM0049. We’re proud to give project developers a credible pathway for permanent carbon storage that delivers verified and meaningful climate impact."

Mandy Rambharos, CEO, Verra

"The approval of the first credits under Verra’s CCS methodology is an important milestone for BKV and for the broader carbon management industry," said Chris Kalnin, Chief Executive Officer of BKV. "Meeting Verra’s rigorous standards demonstrates that permanently sequestering CO2 from natural gas processing can be credibly measured, independently certified and recognized through a robust market framework. This achievement reflects BKV’s commitment to advancing practical emissions solutions across our operations and delivering lower-carbon energy to our customers through our closed-loop business model."

ICVCM Approval

VM0049 and modules VMD0056 to VMD0059 were recently approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) as meeting the Core Carbon Principles (CCPs). VMD0062 is currently being reviewed by the ICVCM.
