As the country celebrated 158 years of its formal creation yesterday, 40 organizations across 18 projects are hard at work in leading Canada's carbon removal efforts.
Over the past year, we have seen a number of purchasers become active across initiatives, including BMO, Scotiabank, and RBC, while Carbon Removal Canada continues to lead on the policy front. B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) and @MaRSDD have also been instrumental in supporting many companies on their way to removing millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide.
In 2025, it’s clear that Canada’s carbon removal momentum was significantly accelerated by critical policy actions taken the year before. The federal government’s $7.6 billion commitment through the Investment Tax Credit, alongside the $135 million allocated for durable carbon removal procurement in the 2024 budget, laid a solid foundation for scaling efforts nationwide.
Coupled with the country’s vast landscapes and diverse natural resources, these moves catalyzed growth across various CDR methods—empowering innovators to deploy solutions capable of removing CO₂ at meaningful scale.
