Carbon capture tech developer Capsol has partnered with decarbonization company Sumitomo to deploy a CO₂ capture demonstration at a biomass-powered combined heat and power (bio-CHP) plant operated by Swedish power company Mälarenergi. This demo, expected to launch this November, will be installed at Mälarenergi’s facilities in Västerås, Sweden, and builds on the success of a previous collaboration at Växjö Energi AB’s biomass plant.

Building on the experience gained from this demonstration, the partners plan to apply the acquired know-how towards a full-scale installation that, according to them, will be able to capture up to 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. This ambitious scale-up aims to make significant strides in reducing CO₂ emissions from bio-CHP plants.
As part of this collaboration, Sumitomo will provide the carbon capture facility, and Mälarenergi will manage onsite operations. This joint effort is expected to demonstrate the practicality and efficiency of integrating carbon capture technology into existing bio-CHP facilities.
This initiative will utilize Capsol’s mobile CO₂ capture unit, which operates using the Hot Potassium Carbonate (HPC) process along with Capsol’s EoP® heat recovery technology. The mobile unit provides flexibility for deployment across various sites and energy projects.
When in contact with exhaust gases, the HPC system captures CO₂ through a potassium carbonate solution. During this process, the CO₂ binds with the solution to form a compound, which is then heated to release pure CO₂ for storage or reuse.
With a carbon capture rate as high as over 90%, the HPC system produces high-purity CO₂ that can be safely stored or repurposed. This environmentally friendly design, based on a non-toxic potassium carbonate solvent, makes it suitable for use in residential and densely populated areas.
This decarbonization process also yields valuable byproducts, including sustainable low-temperature heat production. The byproduct heat can be effectively reused, contributing to the circular energy economy.
Capsol’s licensed technology has already proven its feasibility through a series of demo partnerships with various biomass and energy-from-waste (EfW) plants across Europe. These partnerships validate the technology's versatility and effectiveness in diverse settings.
In alignment with its commitment to accelerating the global shift to net zero, Capsol’s carbon capture initiatives represent a combined potential reduction of over seven million tonnes of CO₂ per year across a network of different EfW and biomass facilities. This scale of impact reinforces Capsol's position as a leader in innovative decarbonization solutions.
Capsol Technologies specializes in developing advanced carbon capture solutions designed to help industries achieve net-zero emissions. Their patented technology and strategic partnerships support the sustainable transformation of energy systems worldwide.
