Commons Expands Carbon Removal Portfolio With InPlanet's Brazil-Based Enhanced Rock Weathering Credits

Published by Todd Bush on September 1, 2026

Climate finance platform Commons has entered a new partnership with InPlanet to expand access to enhanced rock weathering (ERW) carbon removal credits, adding InPlanet's tropical ERW projects in Brazil to Commons' curated offset portfolio.

The Oakland, California-based app helps individuals and organizations track the emissions tied to everyday spending and direct their money toward vetted climate solutions. Commons said the addition follows a rigorous evaluation of InPlanet's measurement approach, field research, and long-term data transparency.

Commons has supported InPlanet's work since 2025, according to the company's own portfolio disclosures, and the expanded partnership deepens that relationship by formally folding InPlanet's Brazilian ERW projects into Commons' broader offset lineup for members.

Why InPlanet's Approach Stood Out

InPlanet applies crushed basalt rock, a byproduct of nearby mining operations, to depleted farmland across Brazil's tropical regions. The process speeds up natural rock weathering, permanently converting atmospheric carbon dioxide into stable bicarbonates while restoring soil health and boosting crop yields for participating farmers.

The company runs the largest ERW program in Brazil by total farmland treated, spanning more than 12,000 hectares. Its credits are verified under Isometric's Enhanced Weathering Protocol and listed on a public registry, a structure meant to strengthen buyer confidence in a still-emerging carbon removal category.

InPlanet's growing base of corporate buyers includes Microsoft, which signed an agreement in December 2025 to purchase more than 28,500 tonnes of carbon removal from the company through 2028. InPlanet also shares anonymized project data with outside researchers and standards bodies to help the ERW field mature as a scientifically credible removal pathway.

For Commons, adding InPlanet expands a portfolio built around diversification. The company says it avoids putting member contributions behind any single offset project, instead spreading support across multiple verified pathways to manage risk and maximize impact per dollar spent.
