Initiative aims to Establish Korea’s First Hydrogen-based Shipping Routes
Hyundai Motor Group is partnering with Pyeongtaek City to develop Pyeongtaek Port into a carbon-free green hydrogen port. This marks the first time hydrogen energy will be introduced to a domestic port terminal with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality.
Hyundai Motor Group announced on Nov. 11 that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Pyeongtaek City government for building a carbon-neutral hydrogen port. The goal is to develop Pyeongtaek Port into a green hydrogen port and establish the foundation for green shipping routes (routes with no carbon emissions during maritime transportation) based on Pyeongtaek Port. The signing ceremony was attended by Ken Ramirez, vice president of Hyundai Motor Group’s Energy and Hydrogen Business Division, Mayor Jung Jang-seon of Pyeongtaek City, and Director Do Kyeong-sik of the Pyeongtaek Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, among others.

Under the MOU, Hyundai Motor Group and Pyeongtaek City will proceed with technology development and projects for introducing hydrogen fuel cell (FC) generators at the Kia and Hyundai Glovis facilities within Pyeongtaek Port. They will build hydrogen production and supply infrastructure around Pyeongtaek Port and support the transition to an eco-friendly port through hydrogen port equipment, truck hydrogen charging stations, and hydrogen-ammonia bunkering. Additionally, to establish a hydrogen ecosystem, they plan to build a power supply structure utilizing hydrogen production complexes near Pyeongtaek Port and expand the eco-friendly green hydrogen supply chain through green ammonia imports.
Hyundai Motor Co. will oversee this hydrogen-related business, while Kia and Hyundai Glovis will be responsible for introducing and operating hydrogen applications. Pyeongtaek City will manage general affairs related to hydrogen city construction, including pipeline infrastructure. The Pyeongtaek Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries will handle permit support and implementation detail improvements, while Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corp. will be in charge of regulatory improvements.
Hyundai Motor Group Vice President Ken Ramirez stated, “This business agreement is an example of public-private cooperation to jointly achieve the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ hydrogen port policy goals and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s hydrogen city policy goals,” adding, “It is particularly meaningful as we are pursuing Korea’s first eco-friendly power supply infrastructure within ports through Pyeongtaek Port and others.”
Meanwhile, since being selected as a first-phase hydrogen city, Pyeongtaek City is planning to build hydrogen pipelines from the hydrogen production complex near Pyeongtaek Port to the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone (Poseung District).
