Isuzu Motors confirmed it will publicly debut its new fuel cell route bus, the “ERGA FCV,” at the upcoming Japan Mobility Show on October 30. The bus, developed in collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation, is slated to enter production in fiscal 2026 as the two companies ramp up efforts to commercialize hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles. The FCV incorporates Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell system designed for heavy-duty use, while retaining the design principles of Isuzu’s 2024 electric bus platform.

The ERGA FCV places its hydrogen tanks and related systems on the roof, allowing for a completely flat, step-free floor throughout the cabin—an accessibility feature that is quickly becoming standard in next-generation public transport vehicles. Isuzu stated that the hydrogen system was selected specifically for its compatibility with fixed-route applications, where refueling infrastructure is more practical to deploy.
Production of the new fuel cell buses will take place at J-Bus's Utsunomiya plant in Ishikawa Prefecture—a facility operated by the Isuzu-Hino joint venture. The announcement comes as Japan intensifies its focus on hydrogen-powered heavy-duty mobility, with buses and trucks being key early applications due to their predictable operating routes and depot-based fueling models.
