Press Release

Santos CCS Project Stores 2 Million Tons of CO2

Published by Todd Bush on May 26, 2026

Santos said its Moomba carbon capture and storage project in South Australia has reached a major emissions reduction milestone, with 2 million tonnes of CO2e safely and permanently stored since start-up.

The company said Moomba CCS, located in the Cooper Basin, is Australia’s largest onshore carbon capture and storage project. The milestone was reached in just over 18 months of operation, despite two significant flooding events in the basin over the past year.

Santos said the project stored around 1 million tonnes of CO2e during the 2024/25 reporting period, equal to about one-third of the total reduction in emissions covered by Australia’s Safeguard Mechanism compared with the previous year.

The Clean Energy Regulator’s 2024–25 Safeguard Mechanism data insights report cited Moomba as a factor behind lower emissions intensity in the oil and gas sector.

The project has also received more than 1.19 million Australian Carbon Credit Units for CO2e injected from start-up through September 30, 2025.

Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher said CCS could help Australia become a regional carbon storage hub, pointing to the country’s geology, regulatory framework, and proximity to major industrial emitters. Santos said its Cooper/Eromanga Basin acreage could support the injection of up to 20 million tonnes of CO2 per year for as long as 50 years.

The company said Moomba CCS is already contributing to Santos’ 2030 Scope 1 and 2 equity emissions reduction target, which it says has been achieved five years ahead of plan. Santos also framed the project as a foundation for a future commercial carbon storage business serving third-party emitters in hard-to-abate sectors such as steel and cement.
