SeaO₂ proudly welcomes the release of Isometric's Direct Ocean Capture and Storage (DOCS) Protocol for public consultation. The ocean is Earth’s largest carbon reservoir, already absorbing ~30% of CO₂ emissions and holding over 100 times more (dissolved) CO₂ per liter than air. The atmosphere and ocean naturally seek equilibrium with respect to CO₂. Through the natural process of air-sea gas exchange, atmospheric CO₂ dissolves into seawater. DOC technology enhances ocean uptake by removing CO₂ from seawater, enabling the ocean to absorb even more CO₂ from the atmosphere.

🌍 Developed under the Isometric Standard, the DOCS protocol was shaped through collaboration between Isometric’s internal science team with feedback from SeaO₂ and DOC peers Captura and CarbonBlue.
At SeaO₂, we believe that rigorous Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) is critical to scaling DOC responsibly. Quantifying removals based on robust science is essential for building trust and impact. We’re proud to contribute to an MRV protocol grounded in scientific integrity and transparency. Our Head of Oceanography & MRV, Daan Reijnders and Chemical Oceanographer, Gerianne Terlouw played a role in the contribution.
In support of the release, our CEO Ruben Brands firmly states:
“Direct Ocean Capture is a highly promising approach to scaling carbon removal by leveraging our most powerful climate ally: the ocean. SeaO₂’s mission is to protect our planet from getting warmer by reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the ocean and, indirectly, in the air, while deacidifying our oceans. We welcome the launch of Isometric's Direct Ocean Capture and Storage Protocol. A transparent, science-led framework is essential to scaling DOCS responsibly and ensuring the ocean remains one of our greatest allies in the fight against climate change.”
The protocol is now open for public feedback, and we encourage all stakeholders to review and contribute to shaping the future of marine carbon dioxide removals (mCDR).
We'd like to thank Isometric and our peers Captura and CarbonBlue for their collaboration in advancing this important work.
